Dogs bark when they go "woof", cats meow when they go "meow". Good point. Dogs should woof when they say "woof", or just say "bark" when they bark. Then there would be parallelism.

Now where in the heck did they come up with the idea that dogs should get a second word for the noise they make and cats shouldn't?
 

I always thought of barking and woofing as slightly different. When a dog barks, it's loud and forceful, when they woof it's softer and they use they're cheeks more. Take it from a guy whose dog makes a variety of very distinct sounds.
 

Dogs have many more noises than cats. Cats just aren't as expressive, for most of them are introverted buggers. My best guess is that a cat is mewing when it goes "meow". Maybe the British version is the description of what a cat's really doing? Hmm.

Other than that, I'd say a cat meows when it goes "meow".
